Recital Essentials Checklist — Everything Your Dancer Needs for Performance Day

Performance day is exciting, stressful, and magical all at once. Whether it's your dancer's first recital or their tenth, forgetting a critical item can turn a dream day into a panic. This checklist covers everything your dancer needs, from head to toe.

Hair & Head — The Perfect Ballet Bun

Every dancer knows: the ballet bun is non-negotiable. Judges and instructors notice messy hair immediately.

Essentials:

  • Bobby pins — At least 50 rose gold pins for secure hold. Fine hair needs more, thick hair needs even more.
  • Hair nets — Match to your dancer's hair color. Two nets per bun for safety.
  • Hair gel or hairspray — Slick back flyaways before pinning.
  • Elastic hair ties — Strong, no-slip bands to anchor the ponytail before wrapping.
  • Satin ribbon — For a polished finish that matches the costume.

Pro tip: Pack a complete ballet bun kit in a dedicated pouch. Our Ballet Bun Kit includes everything in one convenient set.

Costume & Clothing

  • Practice leotard (for warm-up backstage)
  • Performance tights — pack two pairs (runs happen)
  • Costume on its hanger, in a garment bag
  • Wrap sweater or shrug for warmth backstage
  • Practice skirt — for final run-throughs before curtain

Dance Bag Essentials

Your dancer's bag should be organized the night before:

  • Dance tote — A dedicated bag keeps everything in one place
  • Ballet shoe bag — Keeps shoes separate from costumes
  • Accessory pouch — For pins, nets, ribbons, and small items
  • Water bottle — Stay hydrated through long rehearsals
  • Rosin — For shoe grip on slippery stages

Backstage Comfort

  • Snacks (non-messy — granola bars, not chocolate)
  • Water bottle (filled!)
  • Small towel for sweat
  • Book or quiet activity for waiting time
  • Band-Aids and blister pads

The Night-Before Routine

  1. Check costume is clean, pressed, and on its hanger
  2. Pack dance bag using this checklist
  3. Practice the ballet bun at home — timed!
  4. Set two alarms
  5. Charge your phone (for photos!)

On the Day

Arrive at least 90 minutes early. Find your dressing area, set up, and do a calm warm-up. Rush is the enemy of a great performance.
